MFA Graphic Design Student, Radford University | Class of 2021
For my MFA thesis in graphic design, I developed a multifaceted fundraising campaign aimed at raising both visual awareness and financial support for my local animal shelter. The project combined digital design, traditional painting, and community engagement to tell the stories of rescue animals and encourage public involvement. I launched a GoFundMe campaign to fund painting materials, then used those supplies to create a large-scale outdoor mural on the shelter’s building—transforming it into a vibrant, welcoming landmark. In addition, I painted a series of custom pet portraits, which I are for sale on this website. Thirty percent of all profits will be donated directly back to the shelter.!
Take a look at the mural design process below:
Measure it.
When working on a project of this size, accurately measuring the mural location is essential. A single incorrect dimension can mean starting over from scratch—something you definitely want to avoid!
Photograph it.
Every great illustration begins with a high-quality reference image. To capture the best material, I visited SVASC and used my GoPro Hero 4 to take both photos and video.
Design it.
After selecting the best photographs, I use Procreate on my iPad Pro to create digital paintings of each animal. These illustrations are then combined into a mural mockup, which is sent to the client for approval
Digital Illustration Mockup
This project was deeply personal to me. I grew up surrounded by rescue dogs and cats, and my passion for animal welfare has always been closely tied to my creative work. With years of experience painting pet portraits, I knew I had both the skill and the drive to take on a more ambitious piece like the mural. The thesis also allowed me to explore my longstanding interest in nonprofit design, using my professional tools to contribute to a cause I care about deeply.
“As part of our Gives Back program, we’re grateful for the chance to donate to fundraisers that have touched us.”
- The GoFundMe Team
Since I volunteered to create this mural for a nonprofit organization, I also took on the responsibility of funding the project myself.
With support from friends, family, generous community members, and a donation from the GoFundMe Team, I raised $900 to cover supply costs

Ultimately, the thesis served as both a creative challenge and a platform to amplify the voices of those who don’t have one—overlooked companions in need of a second chance.
